Adventures in Baking

Image
Some years ago on Xmas Eve, I tried to recreate a dessert from a cookbook called Death by Chocolate: The Last Word on a Consuming Passion.  The recipes are crazy complicated and, as a complete novice in the beginning, I had some problems. Over the years, I've learned a few tricks and have definitely gotten better. But even now, I sometimes run out of time and end up with ganache that hasn't set and melts down the side of a cake to pool at the base. Not the best look, but still delicious! My experience with taking on recipes that are too much for an amateur is probably what makes the  hilarious Netflix show Nailed It! such a sweet treat for me. They've got a hilarious judges plus amateur bakers who are given complex artistic confections to create within impossible time constraints. I don't even think professional pasty chefs could get the challenges done in time, let alone the motley group of contestants they've got. Check it out! I think you'll lo

Inspired by...

In  Kissing the Suspect , my upcoming romantic mystery, there are a trio of cousins who look out for each other. This element of the story was inspired by my own family. I grew up as one of 14 grandchildren on my mom's side of the family and am still very close to my cousins. A recent unexpected event in my family reminded me how lucky I am to have such a special relationship with the wonderful women I've know my whole life.  Grateful & inspired. 💕

Like the White Rabbit!

Image
"I'm late. I'm late. For a very important date." ~ The White Rabbit, Alice in Wonderland That's the kind of writing moment I'm having! I'd hoped to bring you my romantic mystery in the summer, but a few things got in the way of its release. Part of it was my own indecision as I tried to decide how much romance v. how much mystery to include. You see, I've noticed that a number of authors write either cozy mystery or sexy romantic comedies. I can't seem to find anyone who's combining them. (I find that strange since a lot of authors create romantic suspense, blending intrigue and romance with a darker, more serious tone.) So basically, I've been trying to decide whether there is an audience for humorous romantic mysteries. I finally decided that there's only one way to find out...by writing and releasing some and seeing what you guys think. The first book in the Mystical Melville series, now titled Kissing the Suspect , is com

Perfectly Pie-Jacked is live!

Image
It's been several years since Tammy Jo's last adventure in Casually Cursed where she visited the Never and escaped. In true faery tale fashion she's been living happily ever after.  When she's held up on the side of the road and robbed of her freshly baked pies, it's the first indication that trouble is brewing again.   This 10,000-word short novella shows Southern Witch fans how Tammy Jo's life has changed. And how it's stayed the same. It's available as a free read on Kindle Unlimited & as a 99-cent Kindle download. The link to read/buy it is here. I hope you enjoy it! xoxo, Kimberly

Perfectly Pie-Jacked Excerpt

Chapter 1 Almost the last thing a person expects on a Friday afternoon in April is to be held up on the side of the road by a bandit wearing a blue bandana over his face. I say “almost the last thing” because this wasn’t my first time being robbed by an Old-Timey bandit. Honestly though, I was just as surprised this second go ‘round. Maybe more so, given the time of year. The last time I’d been robbed by someone in costume had been at my friend Georgia Sue’s Halloween party. That first hold-up had been around the time our town’s power was discovered by the outside world. Then all sorts of magical mishaps befell us. You see, I live in the small town of Duvall, Texas, which has a tor—that’s a magic mountain—and it sits on a mystical superhighway of magical lines. It’s real unusual. When supernatural power brokers tried to claim it, we had to fight to keep the town in the hands of the folks who’d always lived in it. But for almost five years, things had been quiet and peaceful. SW Novella Update

Image
The new Southern Witch novella is tentatively titled: Perfectly Pie-Jacked , and I am ~ 6,300 words into it. Here's the opening of the story from the rough draft: "Almost the last thing a person expects on a Friday afternoon in April is to be held up on the side of the road by a bandit wearing a blue bandana over his face. I said  almost the last thing because this wasn't my first time being robbed by an Old-Timey bandit. Honestly though, I was just as surprised this second go 'round. Maybe more so, since it was months from Halloween." Happy New Stories for a Happy New Year

Image
I hope that 2017 was a wonderful year for you, and I'm wishing you an even better 2018! I have been working on 2 stories that I think you'll enjoy. The first is a Southern Witch novella because I know that many of you would like to know what Tammy Jo is up to.  The Southern Witch novella will be available in March as an ebook. The second story is a new novel, and it has the same elements that you get in the SW series, namely humor, romance, and mystery. I can't wait to hear what you think. There will be excerpts from both stories and details on the new releases in my newsletter in February. If you would like to receive the sneak preview, please sign up for FrostFiction News. Take care & thank you for visiting! xoxo, Kimberly
